Chiropractic is the second most
commonly used form of health care in the United States today. To
qualify as a practitioner, a chiropractic physician must complete 5
years of chiropractic school in addition to a four year undergraduate
degree, and then pass national board examinations.
Chiropractors specialize in disorders and
diseases that involve the Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal (NMS) systems.
Most commonly, these are associated with back and neck pain because
of successes that have been achieved with chiropractic care.
Chiropractic physicians also treat NMS disorders related to other
regions of the body, such as shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip,
knee, ankle, and feet. They’re also well educated in other areas,
including nutrition, rehabilitation, internal medicine, and
infections.
The main treatment that’s been
associated with chiropractic care is manipulation.
It’s known that over 2500 years ago in Greece and 2000 years ago in
China, spinal manipulation was used to treat people for health
problems. In the late 1800’s it was formally recognized as
Chiropractic.
The goal of the manipulation is
to restore normal joint function and movement to an immobile joint
segment which could be causing pain. To accomplish this, a
neurological impulse is created, helping reset muscular tones around
the segment which partially generates pain. Additionally,
manipulation has been found to release internal chemical mediators
that help decrease pain.
We also use other therapies such
as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, light therapies, myofascial
release, and specific muscle techniques.
Chiropractic Physicians are also
experienced in conservative measures of care for a wide variety of
other conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, indigestion, and irritable bowel disease, to name a
few.
