Work conditioning is an intensive,
goal-oriented, and personalized treatment program designed to
restore an individual’s neurological, musculoskeletal (strength,
endurance, movement, flexibility, and coordination), and
cardiopulmonary functions to allow a safe return to work. The
objective of a Work Conditioning Program is to restore the clients’
physical capacity to perform job tasks considered essential to their
field of work.
How long is the Program?
The program time line is four to five days per week for 3 week
intervals. At the end of these intervals a re-assessment is
completed to measure improvements. When the goals of the program
have been reached, the individual is discharged.
What is involved in the program?
Strengthening and conditioning exercises are combined with job
simulation activities to gradually increase strength and endurance.
A daily circuit of these activities is developed by the therapist
with input from the individual as well as information regarding the
job in question. The goal of the circuit is to simulate the
postures and activities required of the individual when at work.
In addition, education and pain management skills are provided
throughout the duration of the program.
